GALLO’S SEAFOOD HISTORY

A building with a blue awning and a parking lot.

In the summer of 1966, Frank and Diane Galloway opened Gallo’s at the corner of Taylor & Pacific Avenues in Wildwood, New Jersey. The menu was Italian with fresh local seafood. They operated the restaurant seasonally through 1973. In 1970, they had an idea for a seafood take-out establishment. They opened Gallo’s Seafood on the 8900 block of Frankford Avenue in Northeast Philadelphia. They started the business as take-out dining only, but added counter seats in 1972. That same year, a 30-seat dining room was added.

With the concept of fresh local seafood simply prepared at the lowest prices, business grew quickly. With expansions in 1973, 1977, and 1980, Gallo’s had become a 230-seat restaurant serving thousands of people each week. Lines out the door and word of mouth were their only method of advertisement.

In 1983, Gallo’s was relocated to its present location at 8101 Roosevelt Boulevard. Following a major renovation in 1997, Gallo’s grew to a 340-seat dining room with another 100 seats for private banquets. A larger bar and modern take-out facility were also added on.

The Galloway family sold Gallo’s Seafood Restaurant to James and Patricia Harvey & family in November 2017. The Harvey & Galloway families have a great relationship and the change of hands could not have been a better decision for both families. Many employees who have been there since the beginning are still with Gallo’s and happily working with the Harvey family to operate Gallo’s at its best. While the restaurant has evolved with the times, the commitment to serve the freshest seafood with great service is still their goal each day.
